What to Pray Over Your Children Every Day

I am determined not to have a fear for my children in this horrific world.

As a mom, it is so easy to be black-pilled. People are horrible. Politics are awful. Terrible things happen to good people. You turn on the news and wonder what kind of world your children are going to grow up in. You see things happening around you and your first instinct can be to hold your babies a little tighter and think, How am I supposed to protect them from all of this?

The devil has such a sway on this world.

But guess what?

God meant for your children to be here at this time.

He knew exactly what the world would look like when He gave you those children.

He knew what you would face.

He knew what their generation would face and the struggles they would have.

He knew these things would scare you.

And He still chose you to be their mother. Because He knows you can raise them the way He intends.

As cheesy as it sounds, I heard it like this: you are raising dragon slayers in a world crawling with dragons.

Your children aren't mistakes in the timeline of history. This isn't a new feeling either. I am sure mothers during World War II worried about what kind of messed-up world they were raising their children in. They heard about the terrible things happening in the world, hugged their children tighter, and prayed over them.

Your children weren't accidentally born into the wrong generation.

They are meant to be here.

And you, as their mother, are meant to prepare them.

Not by teaching them to live in fear.

Not by teaching them that the world is something they should constantly be terrified of.

But by teaching them where their hope comes from.

By teaching them who God is.

By teaching them to recognize evil without becoming consumed by it or fearful of it.

By teaching them that they can walk through a dark world without becoming part of the darkness.

And one of the greatest things we can do for our children is pray for them every single day.

Prayer isn't a replacement for parenting. We still have to teach them, correct them, love them, guide them, and prepare them for the world.

But prayer is where we acknowledge that ultimately, we are not in control. God is.

There will be days when you can't be beside them.

There will be situations you don't know about.

There will be decisions they eventually have to make without you.

There will be things you can't protect them from.

But you can always pray.

And the power of prayer is unmatched.

So here are some of the things I pray over my children every day.

1. I Pray for Their Relationship With the Lord

I don't just want them to know about God.

I want them to know God.

I want their faith to be their own.

I want them to love Him when they're little and continue loving Him when they're grown.

I want them to seek Him when life is easy and cling to Him when life is hard.

I want them to know that God isn't just something we talk about at church on Sunday. He is their Father, their refuge, their hope, and the One who walks with them through every part of their lives.

I pray that their faith will be strong enough to take the beatings the world will send its way.

Because the world will challenge their faith.

People will disagree with them.

They may be mocked.

They may be told that what they believe is foolish.

They may have moments when they question things.

And I can't guarantee that their faith will never be shaken.

But I can pray that when it is shaken, they will run toward Christ, not away from Him.

I pray that they will always find themselves walking hand in hand with Christ.

Prayer

Lord,

I pray that my children would know You, not just know about You.

I pray that their relationship with You will be unwavering, strong, and deeply rooted. I pray that as they grow, their faith never wavers. Let them seek You when life is easy and cling to You when life is hard.

Lord, when the world challenges their beliefs, give them the strength to stand firm. When they have questions, lead them to seek You instead of walking away from You.

Let them always find themselves walking hand in hand with Christ.

Above everything else, Lord, I pray that my children belong to You.

2. I Pray That They Will Be Unashamed of Their Faith

I pray my children have the confidence to stand up for what they believe.

I don't want them to be embarrassed by their love for God.

I don't want them to hide their faith because they're afraid of what somebody else might think or because of what the world has labeled as cool.

And I'm not talking about being obnoxious or judgmental.

I want them to be bold and loving.

I want them to be able to say, “I follow Jesus,” without feeling like they need to apologize for it.

I want them to be such a loving light of Christ's love that people want to be around them.

There is a difference between being loud for the sake of being loud and being unashamed of your faith.

I pray my children have the courage to stand when standing is hard.

I pray they don't compromise their beliefs simply because everyone else is doing it.

I pray that when the world tells them they need to fit in, they remember that they were never created to fit perfectly into this world.

They were created for something greater.

Prayer

Lord,

I pray that my children will allow their love for You to remain unashamed and steadfast.

I pray that when the world throws material things in their face, they remain unwavering.

Lord, please give them the relationship with You that pulls people toward You through them.

Let them know the difference between ignorance and confidence in You. Give them the wisdom to be bold without being judgmental and loving without compromising what they believe.

Give them the courage to stand for You even when standing is hard.

Let their lives be a light that points people back to You.

Amen.

3. I Pray They Choose the Right Path

I pray my children go down the right paths.

I know I won't always be able to choose their friends.

I won't always be able to make their decisions.

Eventually, they will walk out my front door and make choices completely on their own.

And honestly, that thought is terrifying.

But it is also where I have to learn to trust God.

I pray that when my children have a choice between the easy road and the right road, they choose the right road.

I pray they recognize when something is leading them away from Christ.

I pray they have the wisdom to walk away from people, places, and situations that aren't good for them.

I pray they don't follow the crowd simply because everyone else is doing it.

I pray they have the courage to be different when being different means following God.

And when they do mess up—and they will, because they are human—I pray they know exactly where to go.

Back to Jesus.

Prayer

Lord,

I pray that You guide my children's steps.

When they have difficult decisions to make, give them wisdom. When they don't know which direction to go, lead them.

I pray that they recognize the paths that will take them away from You and have the courage to turn around.

I pray that You surround them with good friends who encourage them toward You.

When they are tempted to choose the easy road instead of the right one, give them the strength to choose what is right.

And Lord, when they make mistakes, remind them that they can always come back to You.

Don't let shame keep them away from You.

Let their mistakes teach them, grow them, and bring them closer to Christ.

Guide their feet and guide their hearts.

Let them always find themselves walking hand in hand with You.

Amen.

4. I Pray for a Clear Mind in a World That Wants to Muddle It

There is so much noise in the world.

Our children are growing up surrounded by information, opinions, entertainment, social media, advertisements, influencers, and people telling them what they should think, what they should want, and who they should be.

It can be exhausting even for adults.

So I pray for my children's minds.

I pray they keep a clear mind while walking around in a world that constantly tries to muddy it.

I pray they learn to recognize truth.

I pray they have discernment.

I pray they don't blindly believe something just because everyone else believes it.

I pray they learn to take everything back to Scripture.

I pray they are able to recognize the difference between what the world says is good and what God says is good.

And I pray that when they don't know the answer, they aren't afraid to say, “I don't know.”

Instead, I pray they seek wisdom from the Lord.

Prayer

Lord,

I pray for my children's minds.

I pray that they keep a clear mind in a world that constantly tries to muddle it.

Give them discernment.

Help them recognize truth from lies.

When the world tells them something that goes against Your Word, give them the wisdom to recognize it.

I pray they don't blindly follow the crowd.

I pray they don't allow the opinions of the world to become louder than Your voice.

Protect their minds from the things that would pull them away from You.

Give them a hunger for Your Word and a desire to seek Your wisdom.

When they don't know what to believe, lead them back to You.

Let Your truth be louder than the noise of the world.

Amen.

5. I Pray for Their Spiritual and Physical Protection

Of course, I pray for their protection.

I pray for their physical safety.

I pray for protection when they're in the car, at school, at a friend's house, playing outside, traveling, and eventually living lives that don't include me hovering over them every second.

But I also pray for their spiritual protection.

I pray for their hearts.

Their minds.

Their eyes.

Their ears.

Their friendships.

Their decisions.

I pray that their hearts stay soft toward the Lord.

I pray that their eyes are turned toward Him.

I pray that they don't become so consumed by the things of this world that they forget what actually matters.

And I pray that God protects them from things I don't even know to pray about.

Because God sees what I can't see.

He knows what I don't know.

And He can go places I cannot.

That brings me so much peace.

Prayer

Lord,

I pray for the protection of my children.

Protect them physically wherever they go. Keep them safe when they are in the car, at school, with friends, playing outside, traveling, and everywhere else their lives take them.

But Lord, I pray for their spiritual protection too.

Protect their hearts.

Protect their minds.

Protect their eyes.

Protect their ears.

Protect their friendships.

Protect their decisions.

Keep their hearts soft toward You.

Keep their eyes turned toward You.

Protect them from things I don't even know to pray about.

You see what I cannot see.

You know what I do not know.

You can go places I cannot.

Please put a hedge of protection around my children and keep them close to You.

When I am afraid for them, remind me that You love them even more than I do.

6. I Pray That They Bring People to Christ

I don't just pray that my children stay away from bad influences.

I pray that they become good influences.

I pray that they are the kind of people who bring other people closer to Christ.

I pray they are kind.

I pray they are gentle.

I pray they are compassionate.

I pray they notice the kid sitting alone.

I pray they are the friend who shows up.

I pray they forgive.

I pray they encourage.

I pray that there is something different about the way they treat people because Christ lives in them.

I don't want my children to think that sharing their faith only means knowing the right Bible verses or saying the right things.

Sometimes sharing Christ looks like kindness.

Sometimes it looks like sitting beside someone who is hurting.

Sometimes it looks like choosing forgiveness.

Sometimes it looks like being the person who treats everyone with dignity when everyone else doesn't.

I pray their lives point people toward Jesus.

Prayer

Lord,

I pray that my children would be a light for You.

I pray that they would be kind, gentle, compassionate, and loving.

I pray that they are good friends.

Let them notice the person who is hurting or sitting alone.

Let them be the friend who shows up.

Let them forgive.

Let them encourage.

Lord, I pray that people see something different in my children because they know You.

Give them a heart that wants to bring people closer to You.

Let their kindness point people toward You.

Let their words and actions reflect Your love.

I pray that their lives would be a light in a dark world.

Use them for Your kingdom.

Amen.

7. I Pray That They Remember Who They Belong To

At the end of the day, I have to remind myself that my children belong to God before they belong to me.

They are gifts.

They are blessings.

They are little people that God has trusted me to raise.

And that means I have to trust Him with them.

I can't spend my entire motherhood trying to predict every terrible thing that could possibly happen to them.

I can't live in fear of the future.

I can't let the darkness of the world steal the joy of raising my children.

Because God is still God.

He was God before my children were born.

He will be God when they grow up.

And He will be God when I can't protect them anymore.

That doesn't mean I don't take precautions.

It doesn't mean I ignore the evil in the world.

It doesn't mean I pretend terrible things don't happen.

It means I refuse to let fear become the thing that raises my children.

I want faith to raise them.

I want prayer to cover them.

I want Scripture to guide them.

I want love to surround them.

And I want Christ to be at the center of it all.

Lord,

I know that my children belong to You before they belong to me.

Thank You for trusting me with them.

Thank You for allowing me to be their mother.

Help me trust You with them.

When I am afraid of the world they are growing up in, remind me that You are still God.

You were God before they were born.

You will be God as they grow.

And You will be God when I can no longer protect them myself.

Lord, I don't want fear to raise my children.

I want faith to raise them.

I want prayer to cover them.

I want Scripture to guide them.

I want love to surround them.

And I want Christ to be at the center of their lives.

Prepare them for whatever You have called them to do.

Make them strong.

Make them wise.

Make them courageous.

Make them kind.

Make them faithful.

And when this world feels dark, let them be a light.

Help me remember that You placed them here for a reason.

I trust You with my children.

I trust You with their future.

And I trust You with the world they are growing up in.

You Don't Have to Raise Your Children in Fear

There is a lot in this world that could make us afraid for our children.

But mama, your children were meant for this time.

God didn't look at the world and accidentally give you children.

He knew.

He knew the world.

He knew the culture.

He knew the battles they would face.

And He knew you would be their mom.

So prepare them.

Teach them.

Love them.

Correct them.

Equip them.

And most importantly, pray for them.

Pray when you're sitting beside their bed.

Pray while you're driving them to school.

Pray while you're folding their laundry.

Pray when you're worried.

Pray when you're thankful.

Pray when you don't know what else to do.

Pray for their hearts.

Pray for their minds.

Pray for their friendships.

Pray for their future.

Pray for their faith.

Pray for their protection.

Pray that they become people who shine so brightly for Christ that the darkness around them can't help but notice.

They need a prayer over them every day to help shield them and uplift them.

And mama, you need prayer too.

Because you aren't raising these children alone.

You may be their mother, but God is their Father.

You may be preparing them for this world, but God is preparing them for eternity.

So don't let the darkness convince you that it has already won.

Christ is undefeated.

He always has been.

And He always will be.
